New Nordic data center higlights the green potential

The American-based group Prime Data Centers, a global provider of hyperscale and wholesale data centers, has just announced plans to expand its EMEA footprint to Denmark with a new 124 megawatt facility in Sæby.

The new campus, which will serve international customers by hosting cloud service, online stores and artificial intelligence applications, is being designed to set new standards within sustainable data centers. In addition to operating the new data center with 100 percent renewable energy, Prime has entered into a partnership with local district heating Sæby Fjernvarme for the utilization of excess data center heat.

The Prime project joins a growing number of data centers that are designed and developed to utilize excess heat from the very start – a much welcomed development by the Danish Data Center Industry.

"The Danish Data Center Industry association purposefully works to improve the framework conditions and promote sector integration between our industry and the district heating sector, because there are some complex challenges with data center heat reuse which needs to be solved across the board. But all good forces are working on this, and here we have another example that it can succeed," says director Henrik Hansen from the Danish Data Center Industry.

He views the new Sæby project as a great example of the significant potential for developing and operating data centers in the green Danish way.

"The building is set to be constructed with sustainable materials, and even the emergency generators are set to be powered by biofuel. Taken all of these factors into consideration, the data center will not only be climate-neutral, but climate positive. This is the green vision that our association and the entire industry are working purposefully towards," emphasizes Henrik Hansen.
