It was a successful blind date in 2019 when Fredericia Municipality played the matchmaker between Fredericia College of Marine and Technical Engineering (FMS) and management at Google’s brand-new data centre in Taulov, Denmark. Very quickly, it became apparent that the skills of FMS’ engineering students and graduates fit perfectly with the demands of a data centre.

Things have progressed rapidly at FMS during the last three years. The college has created a new elective aimed at operation of data centres, and a small-scale data centre has even been built at the college thanks to generous donations from companies within the data centre industry. Data centre security is notoriously tight and thus it is virtually impossible to get hands-on experience before one is employed within the industry. By having a data centre at the college, FMS students will gain valuable experience by operating it as part of the data centre elective. Furthermore, students on the elective take the course Certified Data Centre professional® (CDCP) which is offered by EPI, an international provider of certified training for data centres. The CDCP course provides course participants with a basic knowledge of data centres, and anyone can partake in the course. No previous knowledge of the industry is required. After completing the course, one will be well equipped to embark on a career within the data centre industry.

Fundamental certification for the first time in Danish.

Until now, one of EPI’s instructors has made the journey to Denmark once every six months in order to teach the CDCP course at FMS. EPI courses are taught in English as EPI is an international company operating in several countries. However, the most recent development is that the CDCP course is now available in Danish as well for the very first time. FMS lecturer and coordinator of the data centre elective, Jakob Langkjær, has been approved by EPI to teach the course in Danish using the company’s course material which will remain in English. This means that not only will FMS students be taught in Danish in the future, others can also benefit from this new development. The FMS Knowledge Centre for Operation and Maintenance has added the CDCP course to their catalogue of postgraduate training. Anyone interested can either join FMS’ students during the 2-day course, or a company can plan a separate course for a group of employees. It should be noted, that both the course material and the final multiple-choice exam are in English. However, Danish speaking participants need not worry about comprehension issues, as instructor Jakob Langkjær will be present during the exam to make sure that there are no linguistic barriers in the way of completing the course.

Course in Danish is excellent

In September of 2022, Jakob Langkjær travelled to Ringsted, Denmark, in order to teach a group of Banedanmark employees. One of the course participants was John Bjørk Christiansen who is a fiber optics designer and system architect at Banedanmark. To him, the relevance of the CDCP course is obvious: “This course is a must to anyone working within the data centre industry,” he states, “and not only that; it is relevant for anyone working for a company with a contract job in relation to a data centre, be it a supplier, a designer, a data centre owner or a customer. With the CDCP course you obtain knowledge regarding all aspects of data centre infrastructure, and you become conversant with data centres and increase the ability to communicate with colleagues, suppliers, clients as well as your superiors.

John Bjørk Christiansen is also thrilled that he and his colleagues did not have to be distracted by linguistic issues while following the course. “The fact that the course is taught in Danish is quite simply excellent,” he says enthusiastically. “It broadens the potential customer base significantly that participants don’t have to translate the course instruction as you go along. It doesn’t get much better,” he concludes.

Wide range of courses in English

For the company who does not shy away from offering its employees courses in English, the entire range of EPI courses is available. All courses related to data centres can be booked through FMS and be taught by EPI’s competent instructors. Topics include centre design principles, data centre efficiency, green data centre principles, data centre management, data centre operations management, security management, disaster recovery management, data centre migration, and ANSI/TIA-942 design and audit.
