A new national center for AI innovation will bring one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers to Denmark. The supercomputer will be hosted by Digital Realty in one of its AI-ready data centers in Denmark.

In this member spotlight, Pernille Hoffmann, Managing Director, Nordics, of Digital Realty, gives her perspectives on the new supercomputer and the data center industry in Denmark in general.

“Of course, this is huge achievement and absolutely fantastic. It's a collaboration I'm incredibly proud of. Collaborations such as this one across industries allows us as a nation to utilize AI and, in this specific case, to accelerate research to find solutions to all sorts of societal problems.”

Denmark’s solid infrastructure and robust ecosystem enables innovation

Denmark’s new national center for AI innovation will bring one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers (the NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD) to Denmark.

The project will come to life in a public-private partnership between Novo Nordic Foundation, NVIDIA, EIFO and Digital Realty. The Danish centre for AI Innovation, which is backed by Novo Nordisk Foundation and EIFO, will own and operate the supercomputer. Any generated revenue will be reinvested in the initiative.

“I believe Denmark and the Nordics have the prerequisites to become an AI hub in coming years. We have solid infrastructure, an extremely robust ecosystem, and favorable conditions for sustainability. In my opinion, as a country we are ready for this.”

The project will also allow both public and private sectors to access the computer to complete research. Incoming research projects will be evaluated on several parameters, including ethics.

“It is my personal opinion that the center for AI innovation will have enormous influence on AI development in the coming years, and I’m excited to follow the project closely,” Pernille says.

Why Digital Realty? Operational Excellence, confidentiality and discretion at the core

According to Pernille, three factors were essential in choosing Digital Realty to host the supercomputer. First, having a datacenter that was AI-ready. In addition, being able to work with sustainability and operational excellence were essential. Pernille explains: “We have talked a lot about sustainability throughout the entire process.”

In an industry surrounded by confidentiality and security, confidentiality, security, and discretion were also essential.

In many ways, hosting the supercomputer is no different than hosting for any other customer. Digital Realty will host under regular colocation conditions. As an established player on the market, they have not had to make many adjustments.

Pernille concludes: “Our customers value security and confidentiality. In connection with hosting this supercomputer, the setup is just like any other customer. We do not have to create a special setup, they become part of our business just like all other customers. This is possible because we already meet the requirements.”
